Why is Hipswell C of E Primary School taking part in the OPAL Programme?
Children attend primary school for seven years. Of those seven years, around 1.4 years (20%) will be spent outside actively playing, making `playtime’ by far the most dominant element within the curriculum.
Why Play Matters at Hipswell Primary School
At Hipswell Primary School, play is a vital part of every child’s day. Through play, our children learn to be kind, helpful and respectful, showing love and generosity in the way they treat others. Play helps them build perseverance as they try new things, solve problems and take on challenges, and it teaches them truth and forgiveness as they navigate friendships and everyday ups and downs. Our outdoor play and learning approach ensures children enjoy joyful, active and imaginative play that supports their wellbeing and helps them flourish as part of our caring Christian community.
Play Charter
Children have a right to play. As adults, we have a responsibility to ensure that childhood experiences include opportunities for play.
The Play Charter is our school’s shared promise to give every child high‑quality, inclusive and adventurous play every day, recognising play as a vital part of their learning, wellbeing and development. It means your child has the right to rich, varied play experiences supported by adults who encourage independence, creativity and safe risk‑taking, and who help children learn to manage equipment, look after each other and make positive choices.
Ultimately, the Charter shows our commitment to making playtimes happier, calmer and more meaningful so children return to class ready to learn and thrive.

The Opening of Zone 15 'The Creative Zone'
It was lovely to see so many children getting creative in our new zone, opened today 20.05.26. We had colour mixing, sketching, shading, cutting, sticking and much more going on. Who knew we had so many budding artists? We are delighted to offer this exciting space where the children's imagination can run wild!
